What Do I Wear For My Photo Shoot?

When it comes to preparing for a photo shoot, choosing the right outfit, when you have no idea what to wear,  can make ALL the difference. And that’s why styling is inclusive of what we do for you, when you book your photo shoot with us.

While there are countless styles and just as many themes possible to consider, I recommend fitted outfits because they stand out for their ability to enhance your natural body shape and create stunning, flattering portraits.

I believe that every woman deserves to feel confident and beautiful in front of the camera, and thoughtful styling coupled with good posing, plays a crucial role in achieving that.

Why Fitted Outfits Shine In Portraits

1. Accentuate Your Shape

Fitted outfits are designed to follow the natural curves of your body, highlighting your shape in a flattering and elegant way.

By wearing clothes that fit your body well, you draw attention to your best features, creating a harmonious and balanced look in your photographs.

Whether you have an hourglass figure, an athletic build, curvy, or any other body type, a fitted outfit can accentuate your unique silhouette and celebrate your natural beauty.

• Example: A fitted dress with a defined waistline can emphasize an hourglass figure, while a well tailored blazer can add structure and highlight the shoulders and waist, creating a more classically balanced look.

2. Enhance Your Confidence

Feeling comfortable and confident in your outfit is essential for a successful photo shoot.

You are more likely to feel at ease with good and thoughtful styling for your body type, allowing your natural confidence to shine through.

This ease translates into your posing, your expressions, and overall presence in front of the camera, resulting in portraits that truly capture your essence and personality.

• Example: A outfit that hugs your natural curves and good posing, can make you feel poised and self-assured, helping you relax and enjoy the photo shoot experience, leading to more genuine and radiant expressions and photos that you will love.

3. Avoid Distractions

Loose or baggy clothing can create unwanted distractions in your photos, taking the focus away from you.

Excess fabric (with the exception of long flowing dresses meant for dreamy and movement shots) can bunch up, create unflattering shapes, or draw attention to areas you’d prefer to downplay.

Fitted outfits, on the other hand, provide a clean and streamlined appearance, ensuring that the focus remains on you and your beautiful features.

• Example: A fitted top will lie smoothly against your body, avoiding any awkward bunching that could detract from your portrait’s overall look. And if you’re concerned about your arms, fitted sleeves will downplay this area giving you a more streamlined look to your photographs.

4. Create a Polished Look

Outfits that hug your curves  contribute to a polished and put-together look in your portraits.

They help to create smooth lines and a slimming appearances that looks sophisticated and elegant.

This polished look is particularly important for professional headshots, branding photos, or any portrait where you want to make a strong impression.

• Example: A tailored dress or blouse paired with fitted trousers or a skirt can create a sophisticated and professional appearance, which is perfect for corporate headshots or branding images.

5. Enhance Posing Opportunities

Well-fitted clothing allows for a greater range of posing options.

When your outfit hugs your natural curves, you can move as your body was intended. Enabling me as your photographer, to guide you through a variety of poses that highlight your best angles. This flexibility leads to more dynamic and engaging portraits that capture different facets of your personality.

• Example: Loose fabrics have a tendency to bunch or shift awkwardly, unlike a fitted outfit allow for more natural and flattering poses, whether you’re standing, sitting, or moving.

Tips For Choosing The Perfect Outfit

1. Know Your Measurements

Understanding your body is key to finding clothes that fit well.

Take the time to measure your bust, waist, hips, and other relevant areas to ensure you’re choosing the right sizes. Many clothing brands offer sizing charts to help you find the best fit.

• Tip: If you’re unsure about your measurements, consider getting professionally measured at a clothing store or using a measuring tape at home for accurate results.

2. Focus on Fabric

Choose fabrics that have a bit of give and stretch, such as jersey, spandex blends, or well-tailored pieces made for your body type. These materials conform to your body’s shape while providing comfort and ease of movement.

• Tip: Look for fabrics like cotton blends, ponte knit, or stretch wool for both structure and flexibility.

3. Highlight Your Favourite Features

Think about the parts of your body you love the most and choose outfits that highlight those areas.

Whether it’s a fitted dress that accentuates your waist or a tailored blouse that highlights your shoulders, select pieces that make you feel amazing.

• Tip: If you love your legs, consider a fitted skirt or tailored pants that draw attention to them. If your shoulders are your favorite feature, choose tops with structured shoulders or detailing in that area.

4. Keep It Simple

Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that won’t overwhelm your look.

Simple, classic designs allow your natural beauty to take center stage without competing with busy prints or excessive details.

• Tip: Neutral colors like black, navy, and beige are always flattering and versatile. Bold, solid colors like red, golds and emerald green can also make a strong statement without being overwhelming.

5. Layer with Purpose

Layering can add dimension and interest to your outfit, but it’s important to do so thoughtfully.

Choose fitted layers that complement each other and avoid adding bulk.

• Tip: A fitted blazer over a tailored blouse or a well-structured cardigan over a slim-fitting top can add sophistication without sacrificing the clean lines of your outfit.
